The SpeakEasy Media System is a high tech aid for the blind and visually impaired. The device can scan and read printed text out loud in a high quality voice. Simply place any form of printed text on the included scanner and the system speaks the words on the page. SpeakEasy can store up to 10,000 documents in permanent storage, as well as easily send the document to a portable audio player so documents can be taken on the go.

E-mail is a fantastic technology that allows us to keep in touch with family and friends. The SpeakEasy makes e-mail incredibly easy. The system comes preconfigured with an e-mail address, and all the proper settings. Just plug it in and, "You've got mail!"

Operation of the SpeakEasy is as simple as can be. When you first launch the system, it will walk you through a quick tutorial to get you acquainted with the basic operation of the system. There is no need to listen to hours of complex training material, you can start using it immediately.

The SpeakEasy empowers its users with an extensive menu based help system. Every user interaction, whether it be reading e-mail, downloading a news article, or scanning a document, has an associated help menu that quickly lets the user know what they are doing, and what are the available options. Users do not need to learn complicated keystroke or button combinations, everything is accessible via the help menu. Access to the help menu is as simple as pressing the help button.

Get the news you want, when you want it. News sources come preconfigured. Using the easy to navigate menus, just select the news source (New York Times, Blind Access Journal, Yahoo News, etc) and it will automatically load a list of news stories that you can read. When you select the news story it will immediately begin reading it to you. You have full control over the playback of the news story, pause, restart, read line by line, word, or letter.

Hear the radio shows that you want to hear, whenever you want! Podcasts are radio shows that can be easily replayed by the SpeakEasy. The SpeakEasy comes preconfigured with a variety of sources such as very specific podcasts dealing with information pertinent to the visually impaired, as well as podcasts from NPR and other major radio shows. Just select the show you want and it is retreived and played back with rich audio quality.

Do you need to learn to touch type? No problem! Most features of the SpeakEasy do not require any typing ability. Some capabilities, such as e-mail, do require typing on a keyboard. Included with the SpeakEasy is a guided typing tutor. The typing tutor will take you through the complete process of learning how to type on a computer keyboard. Each lesson introduces new keys and explains how to find them. The fully audible typing tutor will alert you to mistakes and provide helpful tips as to the proper finger positions to use when typing the keys.

Would you like to know if it's going to rain today? Find out immediately. The SpeakEasy will provide up to date weather forecasts whenever you want. Select the weather forecast option, and you will instantly hear the weather forecast for the entire week.

The talking dictionary instantly provides the definition for any word that you are interested in. It also can provide synonyms.

Would you like to know the full biography of the Roman emperor Augustus? How about learning the details of the Watergate scandal? Simply enter the term into the SpeakEasy and you will immediately be presented with a complete description of the information you need. The SpeakEasy utilizes the most comprehensive Encyclopedia in the world. Just about anything you want to know can be instantly read to you.

Your purchase entitles you to free software upgrades. Frequently, new features and enhancements are made to the SpeakEasy. These enhancements will be automatically installed as they become available.

Do you want to take your information on the go? With the SpeakEasy, there is no reason to be tied to your desk. Just grab some information and send it to your portable player. The Portable Player is intuitively integrated with the system. Just press a button, and the text is quickly transferred to your portable player so that you can take it with you and listen to it anywhere.

Do you have a Daisy audio book CD that you would like to read? Just pop it into the SpeakEasy. It will immediately begin playing the audio CD for you. The system can also play regular audio CDs.

If you already have an internet connection, no problem. The SpeakEasy can easily integrate with your existing internet connection. If not, the SpeakEasy ships with easy to follow instructions to sign up for a dial-up internet connection. BasicISP is our preferred provider based on service quality and low cost. Internet service is $6.95 per month for unlimited usage.
